Genre Research: A Quiet Place
- The conventions this movie has are pretty diverse. For instance, concerning the camera angles and movements, this film contains a Bird’s Eye View, which makes the characters appear small and weak. However, low angles have also been used throughout the film to focus on certain aspects to let the audience know what is happening. Close up shots have also been used to portray a dramatic effect and a sense of suspense. Additionally, this movie includes a lot of over the shoulder shots that act similarly to a point of view, which makes the viewers see what the characters are looking at as well as their surroundings. Concerning the props, there are missing people signs to show the audience that setting this takes place is abandoned and deserted. In addition, one specific prop that is relevant to the storyline is an airplane toy. This toy is the start of the story because this is what lets the audience know how important it is in the movie to not make a sound. So, in other words, it highlights the conflict represented in the movie. Moreover, this piece is a bit special because it barely contains dialogue due to its story. Instead of talking, the characters use sign language. To put it another way, ambient sound, also known as the background noises, is the only type of sound used in this movie with sound bridges. Lastly, some editing techniques used are for instance cross cutting, that made the tension rise, by making the audience pay more attention to a specific scene. - -What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that you like?
- The conventions of the movie that we liked are the type of lighting used. To be more precise, this movie has a low brightness with blue and green undertones, which shows that the characters are going through a challenging time and that life is nowhere near pleasant. We also want to use this technique in our project because we are also trying to portray a sense of discomfort in our task. Additionally, we liked the fact that this movie mostly uses ambient sound because it makes the movie seem unsettling, a lot scarier due to the tension created. Finally, the communication methods in the movie are sign language. We don't know if we will be using that in our task, but it may be a possibility in order to not make any noise, and raise suspense.
- -What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
- Some conventions of the movie that did not appeal to us are the fact that there is too much silence. We understand that it is the whole point of the movie, but we do not wish to do the same with our project. Too much silence would result in boredom if the audience if we were to use it in our horror movie. Additionally, one thing that we did not like much was the fact that the source of death were creatures. We think that if the movie were not to show the antagonist that much, or if it were human, it would have been more scary because it would be something the audience could relate to. Lastly, another factor that we did not appreciate was the fact that the cast stays the same throughout the movie, it focuses on one family in specific.
