Genre Research: Scream (2022)
· Common CAMS, CLAMPS, Sound, and Editing seen in the movie?
A common shot in this movie was an over the shoulder shot. In this movie it was cool in because it made the audience able to see the victim getting tortured. A big common mis-scene in this movie is the costume. Specifically the costume of creeper. It’s a black cape and a mask. We also saw the common prop of a phone. The phone was used to make the creepy phone call and to unlock and lock the doors. The common sound used was non-diegetic sound. It created the suspense. The most common editing would be jump cut. It had very fast movement.
· What elements (conventions) of the genre did the movie and that you like?
The elements of the movie that we liked are mostly the props. To be more specific, this movie uses props that portray ’violence', such as a knife, and fake blood. We really like the idea, and are thinking of using similar props because it will most likely scare the audience. Moreover, the main character in this movie has access to technology, such as her phone. We think this is a good element to have because it can be used to reach for help but then suddenly not work, which would add on to the tension previously created. Additionally, we liked the tracking shots because it lets the watchers know what the main character is going through, and therefore creates a sense of panic. Lastly, a factor that we liked was dialogue. The character had lines to say which makes the audience relate a bit more to her, concerning the type of situation she was in.
· What elements of the genre did the movie have that do not appeal to you?
The 3 elements of the movie that did not appeal to us were stabbing with prop, predictability, and violence. The stabbing with prop was very gore and inappropriate. This also does not appeal this because we would not be able to create that scene in our short film. The violence was displeasing because it became hard to watch. We do not want to create that. We want the audience to keep watching and waiting for the suspense. The predictability was not appealing because it just felt like the audience would already know what was happening and horror is supposed to catch you and it seems predictable but not as predictable as the movie “Scream” made it.
